These homemade garlic knots are soft, fluffy, and bursting with flavorful garlic butter and herbs. Perfect as an appetizer or side to your favorite Italian dishes, they feature a tender yeast dough brushed with a fragrant combination of butter, garlic, and seasonings, then baked to a golden perfection.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 cup bread flour
  • 1 envelope instant yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅔ cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¾ to 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 6 tablespoons salted butter
  • 3 cloves fresh garlic (finely minced or grated)
  • ¼ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon dried basil
  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
  • Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Grated parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Minced fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F to prepare for baking the garlic knots.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, instant yeast, sugar, fine sea salt, and garlic powder. Add the warm water and olive oil and mix until the mixture is well blended, about one minute.
  3. Add Flour and Knead: Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the mixture until a soft dough forms. The dough should form a ball but be slightly shaggy. Transfer to a well-floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes, adding more flour if necessary.
  4. Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 10 minutes to relax the gluten for easier shaping.
  5. Prepare Garlic Butter: While the dough is resting, melt the salted butter in a small saucepan or microwave. Stir in the minced fresh garlic, dried parsley, basil, oregano, and a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes if using. Allow the butter to infuse with the garlic and herbs as you shape the knots.
  6. Shape the Knots: Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope approximately 7 to 8 inches long. Tie each rope gently into a knot and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  7. Proof the Knots: Loosely cover the baking sheet with a clean kitchen towel and let the knots rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 30 minutes or until they have doubled in size.
  8. Brush with Garlic Butter: Gently brush the risen knots with just over half of the prepared garlic butter, reheating it if necessary to keep it melted and easy to brush on.
  9. Bake: Bake the garlic knots in the preheated oven for 13 to 15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
  10. Finish and Serve: Immediately after baking, brush the knots with the remaining garlic butter. If desired, sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese and minced fresh parsley before serving for added flavor and garnish.

Notes

  • Use warm water around 110°F to activate the yeast properly without killing it.
  • Kneading the dough well develops gluten, which gives the knots a chewy texture.
  • If you prefer less garlic intensity, reduce fresh garlic in the butter topping.
  • These knots are best served warm, fresh out of the oven.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
  • Reheat gently in a toaster oven to regain crispiness instead of a microwave which can make them soggy.
