This Super Easy Salsa Verde is a vibrant, tangy green sauce made from caramelized tomatillos, jalapeno, and onion, blended with fresh garlic, cilantro, and lime juice. Perfect as a dip, topping, or condiment, this fresh salsa takes just 10 minutes to prepare and adds a flavorful kick to any meal.

Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 1/2 pounds tomatillos (husks removed)
  • 1 jalapeno
  • 1/4 of a medium onion

Flavorings

  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 cup cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice

Instructions

  1. Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the husked tomatillos, jalapeno, and quartered onion. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until they are nicely caramelized on both sides, which enhances their natural sweetness and flavor.
  2. Blend Ingredients: Transfer the sautéed vegetables to a blender or food processor. Add the 2 garlic cloves, 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, and 1 tablespoon lime juice. Blend until the mixture is smooth and well combined. You may need to blend in two batches depending on your blender’s capacity.
  3. Chill and Serve: Pour the salsa verde into a container and refrigerate until chilled. This resting time allows the flavors to meld beautifully. Serve chilled as a dip, sauce, or topping for your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Remove tomatillo husks completely and rinse to reduce stickiness.
  • Adjust jalapeno quantity or seeds to vary spiciness to your preference.
  • Sautéing the tomatillos and onion brings out a sweeter, deeper flavor compared to using raw ingredients.
  • This salsa verde can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • For a smoother texture, blend longer or strain the salsa before serving.
