A quick and flavorful recipe for Spicy Seasoned Black Beans, simmered with jalapeño, smoked paprika, and other spices, perfect as a hearty side dish or a protein-packed addition to your meals.

Ingredients

Seasonings and Oil

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Vegetables and Beans

  • 1 jalapeño (ribs and seeds removed, diced)
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans (drained and rinsed)

Liquids and Garnishes

  • 1 cup low-sodium vegetable broth (or water, plus more as needed)
  • juice of 1 lime
  • fresh chopped cilantro (for garnish)
  • dash or two of hot sauce (optional, for garnish)
  • sliced green onions (for garnish)
  • sliced jalapeños (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil and Sauté Spices: Heat the olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the diced jalapeño and all the spices (smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, cayenne). Sauté for about 3 minutes until the mixture is smooth and fragrant, releasing the aromas of the spices and softening the jalapeño.
  2. Add Beans and Simmer: Add the drained and rinsed black beans to the skillet along with the vegetable broth. Raise the heat to medium-high to bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce it to medium-low and let it simmer gently for 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking. If the mixture starts to dry out, add more broth or water as needed to keep the beans moist and saucy.
  3. Incorporate Lime Juice: Once the beans have thickened to your liking, stir in the fresh lime juice to brighten the flavors. Adjust the lime juice amount to taste, depending on how tangy you prefer the dish.
  4. Serve and Garnish: Serve the spicy seasoned black beans hot. Top with your preferred garnishes such as fresh chopped cilantro, a dash or two of hot sauce for added heat, sliced green onions, and sliced jalapeños to enhance flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • You can adjust the heat level by varying the amount of jalapeño or cayenne.
  • For a creamier texture, mash some of the beans during simmering.
  • This recipe pairs well with rice, tacos, or as a side to grilled meats and vegetables.
  • Use low-sodium broth to control the salt level.
  • Leftover beans can be refrigerated up to 4 days or frozen for longer storage.
