These Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes are a comforting and flavorful meal perfect for a cozy fall evening. Made with ground beef or turkey and a blend of savory sauces, they’re simmered to tender perfection in a slow cooker, making dinner effortless and delicious.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
  • ½ green pepper, diced
  • ½ large onion, diced
  • 2 tsp garlic, minced

Sauces and Seasonings

  • 1 (15oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 Tbsp BBQ sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Additional

  • ¼ cup water or beef broth/bouillon (for deglazing)
  • Toasted buns, for serving

Instructions

  1. Sauté beef and vegetables: In a fry pan, cook the ground beef along with the diced onions and minced garlic over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onions are soft.
  2. Add peppers: Stir in the diced green peppers and sauté for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until slightly softened.
  3. Transfer to slow cooker: Move the cooked beef and vegetable mixture into the slow cooker bowl.
  4. Deglaze pan: Pour ¼ cup water or beef broth into the fry pan to loosen browned bits, then add this to the slow cooker with the meat mixture.
  5. Add sauces and seasoning: Layer the tomato sauce, ketchup, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper on top of the beef in the slow cooker.
  6. Mix and cook: Stir everything well to combine. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours.
  7. Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto toasted buns and serve immediately for a hearty meal.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • Adjust the sweetness and tanginess by varying the amount of brown sugar and ketchup to taste.
  • For a spicier kick, add some chili powder or hot sauce to the mixture before cooking.
  • Serve with a side of coleslaw or a fresh green salad for a complete meal.
