This Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy recipe features tender ground beef patties smothered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy. Perfectly browned and simmered to juicy perfection, this classic comfort dish is easy to prepare in just 30 minutes and serves 4.

Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup onion, diced
  • 1 egg
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

For the Mushroom Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the beef mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, ¼ cup diced onion, egg, and minced garlic. Mix gently until just combined to avoid overworking the meat, then shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  2. Brown the patties: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the beef patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until they develop a brown crust. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook mushrooms and onions: Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet. Once melted, add sliced mushrooms and diced onion. Cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms are softened and onions become tender and translucent.
  4. Make the gravy base: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the mushrooms and onions. Stir well to coat and cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Add liquids and seasonings: Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Then stir in Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to enhance the flavor of the gravy.
  6. Simmer patties in gravy: Return the browned beef patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Spoon some gravy over the patties to coat. Cover the skillet and simmer on low heat for 10-12 minutes, allowing the patties to cook through and the gravy to thicken.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider using a mix of ground beef with a bit higher fat content, around 80/20.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can increase the flour to 4 tablespoons or simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes.
  • Serve Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles to soak up the delicious mushroom gravy.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
