These Parmesan Asparagus Pastry Twists are a delicious and elegant appetizer perfect for any occasion. Crisp asparagus spears are wrapped in flaky puff pastry, brushed with egg wash, and sprinkled generously with Parmesan cheese before baking to golden perfection. Ready in just 25 minutes, these twists are great served warm on their own or paired with your favorite dip.

Ingredients

Asparagus Preparation

  • 24 asparagus spears (trimmed, about 2 inches cut off the hard ends)
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Pastry Wrap

  • 1 sheet pre-rolled puff pastry
  • 1 small to medium egg (for egg wash)
  • ½ cup grated or shredded Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Asparagus: Rinse the asparagus spears under running water and trim off about 2 inches of the tough, pale ends. Place the trimmed spears in a wide bowl, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, then season evenly with salt and black pepper. Toss gently or mix with your hands to ensure all spears are coated well.
  2. Wrap in Puff Pastry: Unfold or unroll the puff pastry sheet on a flat surface. Cut the pastry into strips approximately ½ inch (1.5 cm) wide, with lengths matching the asparagus spears. Take one strip and wrap it spirally around each asparagus spear, leaving the tip of the spear uncovered.
  3. Prepare for Baking: Arrange the wrapped asparagus twists on a baking sheet lined with parchment or baking paper. Beat the egg in a small bowl to create an egg wash, then brush the exposed pastry parts of each twist with the egg wash. Sprinkle the twists generously with the grated Parmesan cheese.
  4. Bake: Place the baking sheet in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C). Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the puff pastry is fully puffed and has turned a golden brown color.
  5. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve the Parmesan asparagus pastry twists warm. They work beautifully as a standalone appetizer or paired with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure to trim the asparagus well to avoid tough ends while eating.
  • Using pre-rolled puff pastry saves time and ensures even thickness.
  • For a stronger Parmesan flavor, you can use freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
  • These twists are best served fresh out of the oven for maximum crispiness.
  • If desired, you can substitute the olive oil with melted butter for a richer taste.
