This Old School Homemade Oreos recipe brings the classic sandwich cookie to your kitchen with a simple, nostalgic twist. Using a Devil's Food cake mix for the cookie base and a creamy cream cheese frosting, these homemade treats are easy to prepare and perfect for sharing. The cookies are soft and rich, with a luscious vanilla-cream filling that mimics the iconic Oreo flavor in a fun, approachable style.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 box Devil’s Food cake mix (approximately 16 oz)

Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix Cookie Dough: Beat the eggs, 3/4 cup butter, vanilla extract, and Devil’s Food cake mix together using an electric mixer until well combined and a dough forms.
  2. Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). If the dough is too soft to handle, chill it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes until firm enough to roll.
  3. Shape and Bake Cookies: Roll the dough into small balls about one to two tablespoons in size. Place them evenly spaced on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 8 minutes, then remove and allow the cookies to cool completely.
  4. Make the Filling: Beat the softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup butter, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy.
  5. Assemble Cookies: Using a piping bag or a plastic bag with the tip cut off, pipe a swirl of frosting onto the flat side of one cookie. Gently press another cookie of the same size on top to form a sandwich.
  6. Chill and Store: Store the assembled cookies in the refrigerator until ready to serve, or keep them cool on your porch if you live in a cold climate.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough before rolling helps prevent spreading and makes shaping easier.
  • The frosting can be adjusted with more or less powdered sugar to reach your desired consistency.
  • These cookies are best kept refrigerated to maintain their shape and freshness.
  • Use room temperature ingredients for easier mixing and better texture.
  • You can substitute the Devil’s Food cake mix with any chocolate cake mix for a variation.
