Ingredients

Salmon

  • 4 6-ounce salmon filets

Miso Marinade

  • ¼ cup white miso paste
  • ¼ cup mirin
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons tamari soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Garnish (optional)

  • Sliced green onions
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Miso Marinade: In a bowl, whisk together the white miso paste, mirin, honey, tamari soy sauce, and sesame oil until smooth and well combined. This marinade provides the rich, savory glaze that infuses the salmon with classic Japanese flavors.
  2. Marinate the Salmon: Place the salmon filets in a shallow dish or zip-top bag and pour the miso marinade over them. Make sure each filet is evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow the flavors to penetrate the fish.
  3. Preheat the Broiler: When ready to cook, position an oven rack about 6 inches from the broiler element and preheat your oven’s broiler to high.
  4. Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly oil it to prevent sticking. Remove the salmon from the marinade, letting excess drip off, and place the filets skin-side down on the sheet.
  5. Broil the Salmon: Broil the salmon for about 6 to 8 minutes until the fish is cooked through and the top is caramelized with a slight golden crust. The internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C) when done.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove the salmon from the oven. Optionally sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds over the top to enhance flavor and presentation. Serve immediately for best texture and taste.

Notes

  • You can substitute tamari with regular soy sauce if gluten is not a concern.
  • Marinating the salmon longer (up to 2 hours) intensifies the flavor but avoid going too long to prevent the fish from becoming too soft.
  • If you don’t have a broiler, the salmon can be cooked under a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for about 10-12 minutes.
  • Use fresh salmon filets for the best taste and texture.
  • For a gluten-free dish, ensure tamari or soy sauce used is certified gluten free.
