Ingredients

Turkey Burgers

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1/2 small yellow onion, very finely chopped or grated
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Oil for cooking
  • 3-4 toasted hamburger buns
  • Corn salsa for serving

Avocado Crema

  • 1 large avocado, flesh removed
  • 1/2 cup cilantro
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt or dairy free alternative
  • 3 tbsp lime juice
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the turkey patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, finely chopped onion, minced jalapeño, honey, smoked paprika, thyme, cumin, and salt. Using well-oiled hands, mix gently until ingredients are evenly incorporated. Form the mixture into 3 or 4 patties, creating a slight well in the center of each patty to ensure even cooking.
  2. Cook the turkey patties: Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat and add a drizzle of oil. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and there is no pink remaining in the center.
  3. Make the avocado crema: While the burgers cook, add the avocado flesh, cilantro, sour cream (or alternative), lime juice, and salt to a high-speed blender or food processor. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides as necessary to ensure a creamy texture. Adjust salt to taste.
  4. Assemble and serve: Spread a generous dollop of avocado crema on the bottom half of each toasted hamburger bun. Top with a cooked turkey burger, add corn salsa and extra cilantro if desired, then cover with the top bun. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • To reduce heat, remove all seeds from the jalapeño; for more spice leave some seeds in.
  • Ground turkey should be fresh and lean for best texture and flavor.
  • You can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream or use a dairy-free alternative to keep it lactose-free.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure patties are fully cooked and safe to eat.
  • Corn salsa can be store-bought or homemade to add a fresh, crunchy element.
  • These burgers can be grilled instead of cooked in a skillet if preferred.
