This homemade cranberry sauce recipe offers a vibrant and tangy twist on the traditional holiday staple. Made with fresh cranberries, zesty orange, and a hint of cinnamon, it’s the perfect balance of sweet and tart that complements any festive meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 (12-oz) bag cranberries, divided
  • Big strips of orange zest from one orange
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 & 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cranberries: Rinse the cranberries thoroughly and set aside half for later use.
  2. Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine half of the cranberries, orange zest strips, orange juice, granulated sugar, and cinnamon (if using).
  3. Cook the sauce: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar and prevent sticking. Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer.
  4. Add remaining cranberries: After about 5 minutes of simmering, add the remaining cranberries to the saucepan. Continue to cook until all the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens, about 5 to 10 minutes more.
  5. Cool the sauce: Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the cranberry sauce to cool to room temperature. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  6. Serve or store: Once cooled, remove the orange zest strips. Transfer the sauce to a serving dish or an airtight container for refrigeration. Serve chilled or at room temperature as a condiment with your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sugar quantity depending on your sweetness preference.
  • For a smoother sauce, use a blender or food processor after cooking.
  • Orange zest adds brightness; ensure to use only the zest, avoiding the bitter white pith.
  • This sauce keeps well refrigerated for up to one week.
