A flavorful and easy-to-make Hoisin Chicken recipe featuring tender bite-sized chicken pieces coated in a savory hoisin-based sauce with fragrant spices, perfect for a quick weeknight dinner served over rice.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • Kosher salt and pepper, to taste

Hoisin Sauce Mixture

  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (or to taste)
  • 1/4 cup chicken stock (or vegetable broth or filtered water)

Garnish

  • Thinly sliced green onions
  • Toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: In a shallow plate, combine the bite-sized chicken pieces with cornstarch, sesame oil, kosher salt, and pepper. Toss well to coat evenly.
  2. Mix the Sauce: In a jug or bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, low-sodium soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic powder, onion powder, ground ginger, Chinese five-spice, chili powder, and chicken stock until fully combined.
  3. Marinate the Chicken: Pour about 2 heaping tablespoons of the prepared sauce over the chicken and mix thoroughly to coat. Let the chicken marinate at room temperature for 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  4. Cook the Chicken: Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. If the skillet is not non-stick, add a drizzle of sesame oil before heating. Add the chicken in a single layer and cook undisturbed for 4-5 minutes to allow browning. Stir and continue cooking for another 4-6 minutes until the chicken is fully cooked through and no longer pink inside.
  5. Add Remaining Sauce and Simmer: Pour in the remaining hoisin sauce mixture. Simmer the chicken in the sauce for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  6. Serve and Garnish: Serve the hoisin chicken immediately over steamed rice. Garnish with thinly sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds as desired for added flavor and texture.

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, increase the chili powder according to your taste.
  • Chicken stock can be substituted with vegetable broth or filtered water for a lighter version.
  • Ensure not to overcrowd the pan to achieve proper browning of the chicken pieces.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed jasmine or basmati rice.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
