A hearty and flavorful Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy recipe that combines seasoned ground beef patties seared to perfection and simmered in a rich, homemade onion gravy. This classic comfort food meal is perfect for family dinners and delivers robust Cajun spiced goodness with tender onions and savory beef broth.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 Pounds Ground Beef
  • 1 Tablespoon Cajun Seasoning
  • ½ Tablespoon Onion Powder
  • ½ Tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • ½ Cup Green Onions, Chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 Large White Onions, Large Diced
  • 1 Tablespoon Cajun Seasoning
  • 1 Packet Beefy Onion Soup Mix
  • 3 Cups Beef Broth
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Flour

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, thoroughly combine the ground beef with Cajun seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, chopped green onions, and Worcestershire sauce to evenly distribute all flavors.
  2. Form Patties: Divide the seasoned ground beef mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each into a round patty, ensuring they are evenly sized for uniform cooking.
  3. Sear Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat and sear the patties, cooking each side until browned and a crust forms. Once browned, remove the patties from the skillet and set aside to rest.
  4. Cook Onions: Lower the heat to low and add the diced white onions to the skillet. Cook the onions slowly, stirring frequently, until they become soft and translucent without burning.
  5. Make Gravy Base: Stir in 1 tablespoon of Cajun seasoning, butter, and flour to the softened onions. Cook this mixture for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste and start the thickening process.
  6. Add Broth and Soup Mix: Gradually pour in the beef broth and add the packet of beefy onion soup mix, stirring continuously to combine all ingredients into a smooth gravy. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  7. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the seared hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the simmering gravy. Allow everything to cook together for 10-15 minutes over low heat until the gravy thickens slightly and the patties are cooked through.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh ground beef with about 80% lean content to keep the patties juicy.
  • Adjust the Cajun seasoning quantity to your preferred spice level.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables to complement the rich gravy.
  • Make sure to simmer on low heat to avoid burning the gravy and to allow flavors to meld.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stove.
