A fragrant and flavorful ginger rice recipe featuring jasmine rice cooked with fresh ginger and garlic, perfect as a versatile side dish to complement a variety of meals.

Ingredients

Rice and Liquid

  • 1 cup jasmine rice, rinsed and drained
  • 1 ½ cups water

Flavorings

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil or butter
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Optional Garnish

  • Sliced green onions for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Start by rinsing the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, then drain thoroughly.
  2. Sauté Ginger and Garlic: In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the grated ginger and minced garlic, sautéing for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant but not browned to release their flavors.
  3. Cook the Rice: Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan with the ginger and garlic. Stir well to coat the rice with the oil and aromatic ingredients.
  4. Add Water and Salt: Pour in 1 ½ cups of water and sprinkle in ¼ teaspoon kosher salt. Stir briefly to combine all ingredients evenly.
  5. Simmer the Rice: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to the lowest setting, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer undisturbed for 15 minutes.
  6. Rest the Rice: After 15 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for an additional 10 minutes to steam and fully absorb the flavors without opening the lid.
  7. Fluff and Serve: Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains. Serve hot, garnished with optional sliced green onions for added color and freshness.

Notes

  • Rinsing the rice removes excess starch, preventing the rice from becoming sticky.
  • Using fresh grated ginger provides the best flavor for this recipe.
  • You can substitute olive oil with butter for a richer taste.
  • Keep the lid closed during cooking and resting to ensure perfect texture.
  • Adjust salt to taste or dietary needs.
  • Sliced green onions add a fresh, mild onion flavor as garnish but are optional.
