A quick and flavorful recipe for spicy edamame with a zesty chili salt seasoning, perfect as a healthy snack or appetizer. This dish combines tender edamame beans with a homemade chili and sea salt blend, enhanced by a touch of sesame oil and garlic powder for a delicious umami kick.

Ingredients

Edamame

  • 9 ounces frozen edamame beans
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoon sea salt flakes

Chili Salt Seasoning

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried chili flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Boil water: Start by bringing a pot of water to a rolling boil on the stovetop or use a kettle to boil the water.
  2. Cook edamame: Place the frozen edamame beans in a saucepan and cover them with the boiling water. Bring the water back to a boil over medium heat and let the edamame cook for 3 minutes until tender.
  3. Make chili salt: While the edamame cooks, combine 1/2 teaspoon dried chili flakes and 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes in a mortar and crush them together for about 1 minute until well blended.
  4. Finish chili salt: Stir in the remaining 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder into the crushed chili salt mixture, mixing well without crushing further to keep the texture.
  5. Drain and season: Drain the cooked edamame and return them to the hot pan. Toss the beans with three-quarters of the chili salt mixture and 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil to coat evenly.
  6. Serve: Sprinkle the remaining chili salt on top of the seasoned edamame and serve immediately while warm for the best flavor.

Notes

  • Use fresh or frozen shelled or in-pod edamame beans depending on preference.
  • Adjust chili flakes quantity to control spiciness.
  • Sesame oil adds a nutty aroma; can substitute with olive oil if preferred.
  • Serve as a healthy appetizer or a side snack packed with protein and fiber.
  • Do not overcook edamame to maintain their firm texture.
