Ingredients

Chicken Skewers

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • Bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes

Honey Garlic Sauce

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water (divided: 60ml used in sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Grill or Oven: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat to prepare for grilling the chicken skewers. If using an oven, preheat it to 400°F (200°C) to bake the skewers later.
  2. Prepare the Chicken: Thread the chicken cubes onto soaked bamboo skewers, spacing the pieces slightly to ensure even cooking and charring on all sides.
  3. Make the Honey Garlic Sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Whisk in honey, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. In a separate small bowl, dissolve cornstarch in 60ml (approx. 1/4 cup) of water, then stir it into the sauce. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat.
  4. Cook the Chicken Skewers: For grilling, place the skewers on the grill and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side until the chicken is cooked thoroughly and edges develop a slight char. Brush the skewers with the honey garlic sauce during the last few minutes of cooking to glaze them nicely. For oven cooking, arrange skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Then brush with the sauce and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes to get a flavorful glaze.
  5. Rest and Serve: Allow the cooked skewers to rest for a few minutes. Serve warm with extra honey garlic sauce on the side for dipping and enjoy your flavorful Asian-inspired chicken skewers.

Notes

  • Soak bamboo skewers for at least 30 minutes before grilling to prevent burning.
  • To make the recipe gluten-free, use tamari or a gluten-free soy sauce alternative.
  • If grilling is not an option, the oven method yields excellent results with a nicely glazed finish.
  • Make sure the chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for safety.
  • Leftover sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
