This easy garlic butter shrimp recipe features succulent prawns cooked quickly in a flavorful mixture of butter, garlic, white wine, and fresh lemon juice, garnished with parsley for a vibrant finish. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or an impressive appetizer, this dish comes together in just 20 minutes and delivers bold, savory flavors with a hint of heat from red pepper flakes.

Ingredients

Shrimp and Seasoning

  • 1 1/4 pounds raw large shrimp prawns (peeled with or without tails on)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Cooking Liquids and Fats

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1/2 cup white wine or seafood broth (can substitute with vegetable or chicken broth)
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Aromatics and Garnish

  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/3 cup parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Butter and Oil: In a large nonstick pan over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of butter along with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Stir constantly to prevent the butter from browning, ensuring an even buttery base for cooking.
  2. Sauté Garlic and Cook Shrimp: Add the minced garlic to the melted butter and oil mixture and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the peeled shrimp to the pan and cook until they begin to turn light pink, which should happen very quickly. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper to taste during cooking.
  3. Add Broth and Simmer: Pour in the 1/2 cup of white wine or seafood broth followed by the red pepper flakes. Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow the mixture to simmer until the liquid has reduced by half, intensifying the flavors and slightly thickening the sauce.
  4. Finish with Butter, Lemon, and Parsley: Stir in the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter until melted. Squeeze in the fresh lemon juice and add the chopped parsley to the pan. Give everything a good stir to combine all flavors. Serve the shrimp immediately while hot.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the white wine with seafood, chicken, or vegetable broth.
  • Peeling shrimp with tails on provides a nicer presentation, but tails off is fine for easier eating.
  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to control the heat level to your preference.
  • Serve this dish over rice, pasta, or with crusty bread to soak up the delicious garlic butter sauce.
  • Use fresh parsley for the best flavor and color, but dried parsley can be used in a pinch.
