Perfect for parties or any day you want a whimsical dessert. Soft, chocolaty, and delightfully decorated, these cookies offer a combination of textures and flavors that kids and adults will love.

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 (3.9 ounce) box instant chocolate pudding mix

Frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons sweet cream coffee creamer (preferably made with real cream, such as Natural Bliss or Chobani)

Decorations

  • 6 chocolate cream Oreo cookies (pulsed into crumbs in a food processor)
  • 14-15 gummy worms (preferably dye-free)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two sheet pans with parchment paper to prevent sticking and allow easy removal of cookies.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and instant chocolate pudding mix until evenly combined. Set this bowl aside.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In the bowl of a stand mixer or using an electric hand mixer, beat the softened unsalted butter, light brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract together until the mixture is smooth and slightly fluffy, about five minutes. This creates a light base for your cookie dough.
  4. Form the Cookie Dough: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until just combined. Using a 3-tablespoon cookie scoop, portion out the dough into balls and place them evenly spaced on the prepared sheet pans.
  5. Bake the Cookies: Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for approximately 12 minutes or until they are set and no longer gooey. Immediately after removing from the oven, press down gently on each cookie with the back of a spatula to flatten them slightly into disks.
  6. Cool the Cookies: Carefully transfer the cookies to a wire cooling rack and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
  7. Prepare the Frosting: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the room temperature butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and sweet cream coffee creamer until the frosting is smooth, creamy, and fluffy.
  8. Frost the Cookies: Using a butter knife or a small spatula, spread a generous amount of the cocoa frosting over the top of each cooled cookie.
  9. Decorate with Oreo Crumbs: Press the frosting side of each cookie into the chocolate cream Oreo crumbs until the frosting is fully coated, creating the look of dirt.
  10. Add Gummy Worms: Place one or two gummy worms gently onto the top of each cookie, pressing lightly so they stick to the frosting and Oreo crumb coating. Your Dirt Cake Cookies are now ready to serve!

Notes

  • For best results, use room temperature butter to ensure the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  • Pressing cookies immediately after baking helps create a uniform shape and texture.
  • Choose dye-free gummy worms to avoid artificial coloring and keep the presentation cleaner.
  • You can store frosted cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • If you prefer a more intense chocolate flavor, you can use Dutch-processed cocoa powder instead of natural cocoa powder.
