This Classic Waldorf Salad features a refreshing blend of crisp apples, crunchy celery, sweet grapes, and toasted nuts, all brought together with a creamy dressing of whipped cream and mayonnaise. Perfectly balanced in texture and flavor, this salad is an easy, crowd-pleasing dish that is ideal for any season or occasion.

Ingredients

Fruit

  • 2 cups diced tart apples (about 2 apples)
  • 1 cup grapes, halved
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

Vegetables

  • 1 cup diced celery

Nuts

  • ½ cup toasted walnuts or pecans, roughly chopped

Dressing

  • ½ cup whipping cream, whipped
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Add the diced apples to a large mixing bowl and sprinkle them with sugar and lemon juice. Toss gently to evenly coat the apples, preventing browning and adding a touch of sweetness.
  2. Add remaining ingredients: To the bowl with apples, add the diced celery, halved grapes, and roughly chopped toasted nuts. Toss gently to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Make the dressing: In a separate bowl, whip the whipping cream until soft peaks form. Then gently fold in the mayonnaise to create a smooth, creamy dressing.
  4. Combine and season: Fold the creamy dressing into the apple and vegetable mixture until everything is well coated. Season with kosher salt, then taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  5. Chill: Cover the salad and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the texture to firm up.
  6. Serve: Serve the salad chilled by itself or on crisp lettuce leaves for a classic presentation.

Notes

  • For a lighter variation, substitute the whipped cream with 2 tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt or sour cream.
  • Make sure to use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • Toast the nuts lightly to enhance their flavor before adding to the salad.
  • This salad is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
