This Chocolate Pastry Braid is a delightful and visually impressive dessert featuring flaky puff pastry braided around melting milk or dark chocolate, optionally sprinkled with chopped nuts. Perfect for serving at gatherings or as a sweet treat, this recipe combines simple ingredients with an elegant presentation and a crunchy, sugary finish.

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 pre-made puff pastry sheet (8x10 inches / 20 x 25 cm)

Filling

  • 4 ounces chocolate (milk or dark)
  • ¼ cup finely chopped nuts (optional)

Topping

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons icing / powdered sugar

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the puff pastry and filling: Roll out the puff pastry sheet to the specified size. Place the chocolate bars lengthwise down the center of the pastry, leaving about a ½ inch (1 cm) margin at the top and bottom. If using, sprinkle the finely chopped nuts evenly over the chocolate.
  2. Cut and braid the pastry strips: Using a sharp knife, cut strips approximately ½ inch (1 cm) wide on both sides of the pastry, taking care not to cut under the chocolate part. Starting from one side, fold the strips over the chocolate, crossing them alternately to create a braided effect.
  3. Chill the pastry: Transfer the braided pastry onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Refrigerate for 20-30 minutes to help it firm up; it can also be chilled overnight if preparing ahead.
  4. Preheat the oven: Set the oven temperature to 350°F (180°C) to get it ready for baking.
  5. Apply egg wash and sugar: Remove the pastry from the refrigerator. In a small bowl, beat together the egg and water to make an egg wash. Brush this evenly over the surface of the pastry. Sprinkle the granulated sugar on top for a sweet, crunchy finish.
  6. Bake the pastry: Place the pastry into the preheated oven and bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up nicely.
  7. Cool and garnish: Allow the pastry braid to cool slightly. Lightly dust with icing (powdered) sugar before serving for an elegant touch.

Notes

  • You can use either milk or dark chocolate depending on your preference.
  • Chopped nuts are optional but add a nice texture and flavor contrast.
  • Make sure the egg wash is applied evenly to achieve a shiny and golden crust.
  • The pastry can be chilled overnight to make preparation easier on the day of baking.
  • For a different flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or orange zest inside the braid before baking.
