Chiles Toreados is a classic Mexican appetizer featuring blistered jalapeño or serrano peppers quickly sautéed with onion and finished with fresh lime juice and soy sauce. This vibrant, spicy side dish offers a perfect balance of smoky heat and tangy brightness, ready in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Peppers and Vegetables

  • 4 large jalapeño peppers (or 8 serrano peppers, or a combination; sliced in half lengthwise or left whole)
  • 1 small onion, sliced (optional)

Seasonings and Condiments

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Juice from 1 small lime (or half a lemon)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: Warm 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  2. Add the peppers: Place the jalapeño or serrano peppers in the skillet and cook, stirring often, until their skins char and blister all over, about 4-5 minutes. Turn the peppers regularly to ensure even blistering on all sides.
  3. Add the onion: Incorporate the sliced onion if using, and cook for an additional minute until slightly softened but still crisp. Then remove the skillet from the heat.
  4. Season the peppers: Stir in the fresh lime juice or lemon juice along with the soy sauce, if desired. Toss the mixture well so the peppers are evenly coated.
  5. Serve: Sprinkle with salt to taste and serve immediately as a spicy, flavorful appetizer or side.

Notes

  • For a milder version, remove the seeds from the peppers before cooking.
  • The soy sauce adds umami but can be omitted for a more traditional taste.
  • Serve as a topping for tacos, grilled meats, or enjoy as a spicy snack.
  • Adjust lime juice to taste to balance the heat of the peppers.
