Cheesy Garlic Cruffin is a delightful hybrid pastry combining the flaky, layered texture of a croissant with the shape of a muffin. Filled with a rich blend of butter, fresh garlic, chives, and mild cheddar cheese, then topped with a buttery garlic-chive glaze, this savory treat is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a savory snack.

Ingredients

Filling

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 3 cups (339 g) mild cheddar cheese, shredded, divided

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, and finely chopped chives. Mix well until smooth and evenly blended.
  2. Add cheese to filling: Fold in 2 cups of the shredded mild cheddar cheese into the garlic butter mixture, reserving 1 cup of cheese for later use in layering and topping the cruffins.
  3. Prepare the dough: Roll out croissant dough on a clean surface into a rectangle shape. Spread the garlic cheese filling evenly over the dough.
  4. Layer and shape cruffins: Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar evenly over the filling. Roll the dough tightly into a log, then cut into equal-sized pieces and place them into a muffin tin, shaped like a cruffin.
  5. Bake the cruffins: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the cruffins in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and fully cooked through.
  6. Prepare garlic butter topping: While cruffins bake, stir together melted butter, minced garlic, chopped chives, and kosher salt in a small bowl.
  7. Brush cruffins: When cruffins are out of the oven and still warm, generously brush them with the garlic butter mixture to add flavor and shine.
  8. Cool and serve: Allow the cruffins to cool slightly in the pan before removing. Serve warm for best flavor and enjoy your cheesy garlic treat.

Notes

  • Use mild cheddar cheese for a creamy, mild flavor that balances well with garlic and chives.
  • To make the cruffin dough, store-bought croissant dough works well for convenience.
  • Be sure not to overfill the muffin tin to allow cruffins to rise and bake evenly.
  • Optionally, sprinkle additional fresh chives on top for extra color and flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the oven to maintain crispness.
