Crispy baked Cheese Rangoons filled with a creamy, flavorful cream cheese mixture, served with a tangy and sweet ginger chili dipping sauce. Perfect as an appetizer or snack, these rangoons are baked to golden perfection and offer a delightful combination of textures and vibrant flavors.

Ingredients

Cheese Rangoons

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 20 square wonton wrappers
  • Toasted sesame oil, for brushing

Sweet Ginger Chili Sauce

  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1-2 tablespoons chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons lime zest
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 2 tablespoons chopped Thai basil or cilantro

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400° F (200° C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
  2. Make the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the cream cheese, finely chopped green onions, garlic powder, and tamari or soy sauce. Mix well until the ingredients are fully incorporated and the filling is smooth.
  3. Assemble the Rangoons: Spoon roughly 1 rounded teaspoon of the cream cheese filling onto the center of each square wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges of the wrappers with water, then carefully bring all four corners together to the center, pinching firmly to seal the filling inside without air pockets. Place the sealed rangoons on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Brush With Oil: Lightly brush each assembled rangoon with toasted sesame oil. This will help them crisp up beautifully and develop a golden-brown color during baking.
  5. Bake the Rangoons: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the rangoons are golden and crispy. If the tops start to brown too quickly, loosely cover with aluminum foil to prevent burning while ensuring they finish cooking through.
  6. Make the Sweet Ginger Chili Sauce: While the rangoons bake, whisk together honey, ketchup, chili sauce, lime zest, lime juice, rice vinegar, tamari, grated ginger, grated garlic, and chopped Thai basil or cilantro in a small bowl until well combined.
  7. Serve: Once baked, serve the crispy cheese rangoons warm, garnished with additional chopped green onions if desired. Provide the vibrant sweet ginger chili sauce on the side for dipping, enhancing every bite with tangy sweetness and a spicy kick.

Notes

  • Using room temperature cream cheese helps in mixing the filling smoothly and evenly.
  • Adjust chili sauce quantity in the dipping sauce according to your preferred spice level.
  • Brush the rangoons with oil just before baking to ensure they crisp nicely.
  • The dipping sauce can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To freeze, assemble the rangoons but do not bake; freeze on a tray then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, increasing baking time slightly.
