The chicken is oven-baked to perfection, delivering a sweet and savory glaze with a hint of caramelization. Perfect served over rice or noodles for an authentic Asian-inspired meal.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil

Marinade

  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ teaspoon red food coloring (optional for authentic red color)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: Whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, brown sugar, Chinese five-spice powder, minced garlic, and red food coloring (if using) in a small bowl until well combined.
  2. Prepare the Baking Tray: Line a baking tray with foil and lightly brush or spray with avocado oil to prevent sticking.
  3. Marinate the Chicken: Arrange the chicken thighs on the prepared tray and brush both sides generously with the marinade. Cover the tray and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to infuse.
  4. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) to get it ready for baking.
  5. Bake the Chicken: Bake the marinated chicken for 20–25 minutes. Halfway through cooking, flip the chicken pieces and brush with any remaining marinade to enhance the flavor and glaze.
  6. Broil for Caramelization: For an authentic caramelized finish, broil the chicken for the last 2–3 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes to retain its juices. Slice and serve over rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Red food coloring is optional and used mainly for authentic color but does not affect flavor.
  • Marinating overnight intensifies the flavor and tenderness of the chicken.
  • Using boneless skinless chicken thighs helps the meat stay juicy and flavorful.
  • Broiling at the end adds a nice caramelized crispness, but keep a close watch to prevent burning.
  • Serve with steamed rice, noodles, or stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
