A fragrant and naturally sweet fig jam infused with warm cardamom, cinnamon, and honey, perfect for spreading on toast, swirling into yogurt, or elevating desserts with a rich, aromatic flavor.

Ingredients

Figs

  • 1 pound (453g) black mission figs (or your favorite kind)

Sweeteners and Spices

  • to ½ cup (113-170g) honey (to taste)
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon (1-2g) cardamom (to taste)
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon (or a few dashes)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the figs: Rinse the figs gently under cool water and pat dry. Remove the stems, then chop the figs into quarters or smaller pieces to help them cook down evenly.
  2. Combine ingredients in a pot: Place the chopped figs, honey, cardamom, and ground cinnamon into a medium-sized saucepan or pot.
  3. Cook the jam: Set the pot over medium-low heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Allow the figs to break down and the mixture to thicken, about 25-35 minutes.
  4. Check consistency and flavor: Stir frequently as the liquid reduces and the jam thickens. Adjust sweetness and spices as needed by adding more honey or cardamom to taste.
  5. Cool and store: Once thickened to your preference, remove the pot from heat and let the jam cool. Transfer to sterilized jars and refrigerate. The jam will continue to thicken as it cools.

Notes

  • The ripeness and variety of figs will affect the sweetness and texture of your jam.
  • You can substitute other sweeteners like maple syrup if preferred.
  • Store the jam in the refrigerator for up to three weeks or freeze for longer storage.
  • Use sterilized jars to ensure safer preservation.
  • Adjust the cardamom and cinnamon according to your flavor preference; they're key to the fragrant profile of this jam.
