Butterfly Pea Flower Tea is a vibrant, naturally blue herbal tea made by steeping dried butterfly pea flowers in hot water. Known for its stunning color and mild, earthy flavor, this tea can be enjoyed hot or cold and brightens up with the addition of lemon juice, which changes its color to a beautiful purple. Perfect for a calming, antioxidant-rich beverage, this simple recipe requires minimal ingredients and equipment.

Ingredients

Tea Ingredients

  • 1 cup water (plus extra to warm teapot)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons butterfly pea flower loose tea
  • Lemon slices or lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil Water: Bring fresh filtered water to a boil using an electric kettle set to 208°F or until boiling point is reached, making slightly more water than needed to also warm the teapot.
  2. Warm Teapot: Pour some of the hot water into your teapot and swirl it around to warm the vessel. Discard the warming water to ensure the tea steeps at an optimal temperature.
  3. Steep Tea: Place 1 ½ teaspoons of butterfly pea flowers into the warmed teapot. Pour 1 cup of the hot water over the flowers, cover the teapot, and let it steep for 5 minutes to extract the flavor and brilliant blue color.
  4. Strain and Serve: After steeping, strain the tea into a teacup to remove the flowers. Add lemon slices or a splash of lemon juice if desired, which will change the color to purple and add a refreshing citrus note.

Notes

  • Use filtered water for best taste and clarity.
  • Adjust steeping time according to preferred strength and flavor.
  • Adding lemon juice not only enhances flavor but also changes the tea's color due to pH reaction.
  • This tea can be served hot or chilled over ice for a refreshing iced tea.
