This Blackened Salmon recipe features perfectly seasoned salmon fillets coated with a flavorful blend of spices, then seared in a hot skillet to achieve a crispy, charred crust while keeping the flesh tender and flaky. Ready in just 15 minutes, it's a quick and delicious dinner option that pairs beautifully with a fresh squeeze of lime and a sprinkle of parsley.

Ingredients

Blackening Spice Mix

  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dark brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Salmon

  • 1 ½ pounds salmon fillet (skin removed)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 lime (cut into 4 wedges)
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Mix Blackening Spice: In a small bowl, thoroughly combine paprika, cumin, dark brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, chili powder, and black pepper to create the blackening seasoning mix.
  2. Prepare Salmon Filets: Cut the salmon fillet into 4 equal portions, about 6 ounces each. Evenly season each side of the salmon pieces with about 1 teaspoon of the blackening spice mix, ensuring full coverage for maximum flavor.
  3. Cook Salmon: Heat a large stainless steel or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add the olive oil and place the salmon fillets skin-side up in the pan. Cook without moving for 2 to 3 minutes until the exterior is charred and crisp. Flip the fillets carefully and continue cooking for an additional 1 to 2 minutes until the salmon flakes easily with a fork.
  4. Plate & Serve: Transfer the cooked salmon to plates. Garnish with a lime wedge on the side and sprinkle with chopped parsley for freshness. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Using a cast iron or stainless steel skillet helps achieve the best sear and blackened effect.
  • Adjust heat as necessary to prevent burning while still getting a nice char.
  • You can substitute the lime with lemon for a different citrus note.
  • For a gluten-free version, ensure all spices and sugar used are certified gluten-free.
  • Salmon with skin on works too, but for this recipe, the skin is removed for even seasoning.
