Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck (80% lean)
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper

Buns and Toppings

  • 4 burger buns of choice
  • lettuce
  • tomato
  • red onion
  • avocado
  • ketchup
  • mustard

Instructions

  1. Form Patties: Shape the ground chuck into four 6-ounce patties about 4 1/2 inches in diameter and 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Press your thumb into the center of each patty to create a small indent, which helps them cook evenly and prevents puffing up.
  2. Prepare the Grill: Brush the grill grates clean and wipe them with a lightly oiled paper towel to prevent sticking and ensure a good sear.
  3. Preheat the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high heat, approximately 400-425°F, so it is ready to cook the burgers evenly and lock in juices.
  4. Season the Patties: In a small bowl, mix the kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and fresh cracked black pepper. Sprinkle this seasoning mixture generously on both sides of the burger patties.
  5. Grill the Burgers: Place the seasoned patties on the hot grill. Close the lid and cook for 3 to 5 minutes on one side. Flip the burgers and grill for another 3 to 5 minutes depending on desired doneness. For a 3/4 inch thick patty, about 4 minutes per side will achieve a medium temperature of 140-145°F.
  6. Serve: Remove the burgers from the grill and serve immediately on your choice of buns with desired toppings such as lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, ketchup, and mustard.

Notes

  • Note 1: Using 80% lean ground chuck is ideal for juicy, flavorful burgers without excessive fat.
  • Note 2: Adjust grilling times based on patty thickness and preferred doneness: rare (120-125°F) – 3 minutes per side; medium-rare (130-135°F) – 3-4 minutes per side; medium (140-145°F) – 4 minutes per side; well-done (160°F+) – 5 minutes per side or longer.
  • Tip: Pressing an indent in the center of each patty prevents the burger from bulging while cooking, ensuring an even shape and thorough cooking.
  • For food safety, use a meat thermometer to check internal temperature.
