Bangkok Shrimp is an exciting fusion dish featuring crispy, corn starch battered shrimp tossed in a flavorful, tangy, and slightly spicy sauce combining kimchi, sweet chili, buffalo heat, and a hint of sweetness from honey and brown sugar. Perfect as an appetizer or main, this dairy-free shrimp recipe delivers bold Asian-inspired flavors with a crunchy texture.

Ingredients

Shrimp Batter

  • 1 ½ pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 3 tablespoons corn starch
  • ¾ teaspoon garlic pepper seasoning

Sauce

  • ¼ cup ClevelandKitchen Classic Kimchi, pulsed in food processor
  • ¼ cup sweet chili sauce
  • ⅓ cup mild buffalo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 4 tablespoons dairy free butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Shrimp: Rinse and pat dry the peeled and deveined shrimp. In a bowl, mix the shrimp with corn starch and garlic pepper seasoning until each piece is evenly coated, ensuring a crisp, flavorful batter.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a food processor, pulse the classic kimchi until finely chopped. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the dairy-free butter, then add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Stir in the processed kimchi, sweet chili sauce, mild buffalo sauce, rice vinegar, honey, and brown sugar. Simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and flavors meld together.
  3. Cook the Shrimp: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil. Add the battered shrimp in batches and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden and crispy and cooked through. Avoid overcrowding the pan to maintain crispness.
  4. Toss Shrimp in Sauce: Once all shrimp are cooked, add them to the saucepan with the prepared sauce. Toss thoroughly to evenly coat each shrimp with the delicious Bangkok-inspired sauce.
  5. Serve: Transfer the sauced shrimp to a serving dish and garnish as desired. Serve immediately as a shareable appetizer or complement with steamed rice for a main dish.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, make sure shrimp are dry before battering.
  • You can adjust spice level by using a hotter buffalo sauce or adding fresh chili flakes.
  • Dairy free butter keeps the recipe vegan-friendly if using plant-based shrimp substitutes.
  • Serve with lime wedges and fresh cilantro for a bright garnish.
  • Leftover shrimp and sauce can be stored separately and reheated gently.
