A classic baked ziti recipe featuring tender pasta baked with a savory meat sauce, creamy sour cream, and a blend of provolone, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses. This comforting Italian-American casserole is perfect for family dinners and easily serves 10.

Ingredients

Pasta

  • 1 pound dry ziti pasta

Meat Sauce

  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 jars spaghetti sauce (26 ounces each)

Cheeses and Cream

  • 6 ounces sliced provolone cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 6 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the dry ziti pasta and cook for about 8 minutes until it is al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
  2. Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the lean ground beef with the diced onion, stirring occasionally until the beef is fully cooked and onions are translucent. Stir in the spaghetti sauce and allow the mixture to simmer for 15 minutes to develop the flavors.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  4. Assemble the Baked Ziti: Spread half of the cooked ziti evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer the sliced provolone cheese followed by the sour cream over the pasta. Spoon half of the meat sauce on top. Add the remaining ziti, then sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese and cover with the remaining meat sauce. Finish by sprinkling the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
  5. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until the casserole is heated through and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove from oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade baked ziti!

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with sautéed mushrooms or plant-based meat alternatives and use vegetable spaghetti sauce.
  • To enhance flavor, you can add garlic when browning the beef and onion.
  • Use whole wheat or gluten-free pasta to accommodate dietary preferences.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be frozen for up to 1 month.
  • Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste before baking.
